Is a Freelance worker considered unemployed?

Depends on why your asking. If you are asking if this is a stereotype then I would have to say that if you truly “working” on something and anticipate a return on your work later then no you are not unemployed. If you are just in denial and are not working towards a goal then yes you are unemployed and would rather call yourself a freelance worker to make yourself sound better. If you are asking because you want to collect unemployment then you should contact your local office to see what factors they consider in determining your employment status.

As a contract or freelance worker are you employed or not?

Beyond the Great Recession: What Happened and How to Prosper

Beyond the Great Recession: What Happened and How to Prosper

$11.17

The economy is complicated, and it’s changing fast. You know it’s affecting your life and business, but you don’t have time to figure it out. Kimberly Amadeo does. She boils it all down for you in her book Beyond the Great Recession: What Happened and How to Prosper. This entertaining 216-page book tells you what really caused the Great Recession, what shifts to expect, and most important, what you need do now. Beyond gives you the facts, so you can form your own opinion. It explains things clearly so you can understand what really happened. The Great Recession was caused by a perfect storm of economic events. One of these was financial innovation: derivatives such as mortgage-backed securities and credit default swaps. These products were so complex because they were created by “quant jocks” running computer programs. Even the hedge funds that bought them didn’t really understand their true value. And they weren’t regulated. The result? The economy had a heart attack. Although the patient didn’t die, it won’t be running a marathon anytime soon. Life has changed. One such change, the Freelance Economy, means employers will keep part-time, contract and temp workers instead of hiring full-time workers and paying an additional 40% in benefits. To prosper, you must look for multiple streams of income, be flexible, and diversify. This is just one of the tools you will learn about in Beyond the Great Recession.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Charles Handy (born 1932) is an Irish author/philosopher specialising in organisational behaviour and management. Among the ideas he has advanced are the “portfolio worker” and the “Shamrock Organization” (in which professional core workers, freelance workers and part-time/temporary routine workers each form one leaf of the “Shamrock”). He has been rated among the Thinkers 50, a private list of the most influential living management thinkers. In 2001 he was second on this list, behind Peter Drucker, and in 2005 he was tenth. When the Harvard Business Review had a special issue to mark their 50th Anniversary they asked Handy, Peter Drucker and Henry Mintzberg to write special articles.

Crossing the River: A Memoir of the American Left, the Cold War, and Life in East Germany

Crossing the River: A Memoir of the American Left, the Cold War, and Life in East Germany

$65.43

What could possibly impel a relatively privileged twenty-four-year-old American — serving in the U.S. Army in Germany in 1952 — to swim across the Danube River to what was then referred to as the Soviet Zone? How are we to understand his decision to forsake the land of his birth and build a new life in the still young German Democratic Republic? These are the questions at the core of this memoir by Victor Grossman, who was born Stephen Wechsler but changed his name after defecting to the GDR.A child of the Depression, Grossman witnessed firsthand the dislocations wrought by the collapse of the U.S. economy during the 1930s. Widespread unemployment and poverty, CIO sit-down strikes, and the fight to save Republican Spain from fascism — all made an indelible impression as he grew up in an environment that nurtured a commitment to left-wing causes. He continued his involvement with communist activities as a student at Harvard in the late 1940s and after graduation, when he took jobs in two factories in Buffalo, New York, and tried to organize their workers.Fleeing McCarthyite America and potential prosecution, Grossman worked in the GDR with other Western defectors and eventually became, as he notes, the only person in the world to attend Harvard and Karl Marx universities. Later, he was able to establish himself as a freelance journalist, lecturer, and author. Traveling throughout East Germany, he evaluated the failures as well as the successes of the GDR’s socialist experiment. He also recorded his experiences, observations, and judgments of life in East Berlin after reunification, which failed to bring about the post-Communist paradise so many had expected.Written withhumor as well as candor, Crossing the River provides a rare look at the Cold War from the other side of the ideological divide.Mark Solomon, a distinguished historian of the American left, provides a historical afterword that places Grossman’s experiences in a larger Cold War context

Down and Out: The Life and Dealth of Minneapolis's Skid Row

Down and Out: The Life and Dealth of Minneapolis’s Skid Row

$19.29

Minneapolis’s skid row, known as the Gateway district, was a lively area consisting of dozens of bars, flophouses, pawnshops, burlesque houses, charity missions, and office buildings that had aged past their prime. Encompassing some twenty-five blocks centering on the intersection of Hennepin, Washington, and Nicollet Avenues, the neighborhood was demolished between 1959 and 1963 as part of the first federally funded urban renewal project in America. Gathered here for the first time, Edwin C. Hirschoff’s stark and moving images of the Gateway district’s final days-its streets, buildings, and parks, the rubble, smoke, and heavy equipment of its destruction-eloquently capture its demise. Down and Out provides a unique historical perspective and the most extensive photographic record available of the Gateway demolition project.Joseph Hart’s engaging and comprehensive essay complements Hirschoff’s photographs by detailing the district’s social and economic evolution and the political decision making that led to its destruction. Hart presents a popular history of Minneapolis’s skid row and the people who lived there, migrant workers who learned that changes in the local economy could quickly degrade their status from valued laborer to societal menace (vagrant, tramp, or bum). By capturing the texture of life on skid row, Hart reveals the lost American culture of a bygone community. A creative photographer, entrepreneur, and inventor, Edwin C. Hirschoff had a successful career in public relations before founding Art-o-graph, a Minneapolis business that has prospered for more than half a century. Born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1905, he lived in Minneapolis for almost ninety years. Joseph Hart is a writer, editor, and teacher living in Minneapolis. A former staff writer at City Pages, he is a freelance journalist who writes for local and national publications.

Freelancing Expertise: Contract Professionals in the New Economy

Freelancing Expertise: Contract Professionals in the New Economy

$13

Contract work is more important than ever-for better or for worse, depending on one’s perspective. The security once implied by a full-time job with a stable employer is becoming rarer, thereby erasing one of the major distinctions between “freelance work” and a “steady gig.” Why hang on to a regular job for the sake of security if security can no longer be assumed? Instead, contractors, hired temporarily for specific knowledge and skills, market their expertise as they move from project to project. Even though their employment is precarious, a great many consider freelancing preferable to holding a “regular” job: the control they feel over their time and careers is well worth the risks that come with relatively uncertain cash flow. Freelancing Expertise is a qualitative study of decision making, work practices, and occupational processes among writers and editors who work in print and Web communications and programmers and engineers who work in software and systems development. Debra Osnowitz conducted sixty-eight extended interviews with representatives of both groups and twelve interviews with managers and recruiters, observed four different work settings in which contractors work alongside employees, and monitored blogs and online discussions among contractors. As a result, she provides a unique and sensitive assessment of a cultural shift in occupations and organizations. Osnowitz calls for a reconfiguration of the employer/employee relationship that accepts more variation and flexibility: just as “freelancing” has, over time, taken on many traits considered characteristic of traditional career paths, so might regular jobs make themselves more appealing to today’s workforce by mimicking some of the positive aspects of transactions between clients and contract workers.

 Freeter

Freeter

$44

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Freeter (other spellings below) is a Japanese expression for people between the age of 15 and 34 who lack full time employment or are unemployed, excluding homemakers and students. They may also be described as underemployed or freelance workers. These people do not start a career after high school or university but instead usually live as so-called parasite singles with their parents and earn some money with low skilled and low paid jobs. The low income makes it difficult for freeters to start a family, and the lack of qualifications makes it difficult to start a career at a later point in life. The word freeter or freeta was first used around 1987 or 1988 and is thought to be an amalgamation of the English word free (or perhaps freelance) and the German word Arbeiter (“worker”). Another possibility is a shortening of freeloader, furee-ro-da to furi-da. (The German word Arbeit is commonly used as the Japanese loanword arubaito for part-time job.) It is said that the use was coined by the Japanese part time job magazine From A . Other possible spellings are furītā, furiita, freeta, furiitaa, or furitaa in order of frequency.

Excerpt: American Dream American Dream (1990) is a cinéma vérité documentary film directed by Barbara Kopple and co-directed by Cathy Caplan, Thomas Haneke, and Lawrence Silk. The film recounts an unsuccessful strike in the heartland of America against the Hormel Foods corporation. Synopsis The film is centered on unionized meatpacking workers at Hormel Foods in Austin, Minnesota between 1985 and 1986. Hormel had cut the hourly wage from $10.69 to $8.25 and cut benefits by 30 percent despite posting a net profit of $30 million. The local union (P-9) opposed the cut, but the international union, the United Food and Commercial Workers , did not support them. The local union is shown hiring a freelance strike consultant, Ray Rogers, who comes in with charts, graphs and promises of a corporate campaign to draw national press attention. Rogers delivers in the short term, but, it is not enough to defeat opposition from Hormel management and the UFCW international union. The local union, in defying its national union, believed that its workers should be paid more by Hormel than unionized workers at other companies. This came at a time when the U.S. had just emerged from a deep recession and inflation was at or near double digits, thus making the company’s financial position fragile despite its profitability. A negotiator for the national union is shown on camera explaining that their rapacity cost the national union forty years of benefits, as the local union made the mistake of “tearing up” and attempting to rework the contract, thus opening the door for Hormel to toss out guarantees and benefits that had

Let Us Fight For Africa. A Play Based On The John Chilembwe Rising Of 1915

Let Us Fight For Africa. A Play Based On The John Chilembwe Rising Of 1915

$22.95

Let us Fight for Africa is a historical play of the 1915 Nyasaland African uprising led by John Chilembwe. In 1897 the freelance English missionary Joseph Booth took John Chilembwe to America where, through the offices of black American colleagues, he received a three year theological education. He returned in 1900 and founded his own church and school, wrote in the Nyasaland Times he was to make an African a worthy member of the human race and indomitable. Over time thousands of Africans visited Chilembwe to complain about the manner in which they were being treated as tenants and workers on European estates. On 23rd January, 1915 he led 1000 men in a rising to drive out foreign rulers of the country and set up a government of his own. The rising was crushed within two weeks. His death was kept a mystery for several decades. The Malawi currency now is imprinted with Chilembwe’s portrait. Plays are aired on the radio and TV both on Chilembwe Day and on Martyrs’ Day. Chilembwe’s name is now revered throughout Africa, and therefore has continent-wide relevance.

 Packinghouse Daughter

Packinghouse Daughter

$24.95

Packinghouse Daughter, just published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press, merges personal memoir and public history to tell a compelling story about family loyalty, small-town life, and working-class values in the face of a violent labor strike in 1959. The daughter of a Wilson & Co. packinghouse worker, Cheri Register recalls the meatpackers’ strike that devastated and divided her hometown of Albert Lea, Minnesota. The violence that erupted when the company replaced its union workers with strikebreakers tested family loyalty and community stability, and attracted national attention when the governor of Minnesota called in the National Guard, declared martial law, and closed the plant. Register skillfully weaves her own memories, historical research, and first-person interviews of participants on both sides of the strike into a narrative that is thoughtful and impassioned about the value of blue-collar work and the dignity of those who do it.The more Register researched and wrote about the strike, the more she had to admit that she could no longer divide labor issues into the simplified terms of her youth. As part of the first generation of her family to attend college, much less attain a Ph.D., Register struggles to acknowledge such complexities without dishonoring her working-class roots. Packinghouse Daughter also testifies to the hold that childhood experience has on personal values and notions of social class, despite the upward mobility that is the great promise of American democracy. Register’s journey reflects the inner conflict felt by a generation that came of age in the 1960s, propelled into the middle-class by post-war prosperity, people like herself who feel caught between the blue-collar values of the communities we left behind and our new status as the ‘rich’ people we used to scoff at .Cheri Register is a freelance writer and teacher of creative writing, living in Minneapolis. The opening chapter of Packinghouse Daughter was cited as a

 Recording in Social Work

For most social workers, recording and documenting information is a necessary evil. It is a highly complex and demanding aspect of the professional practice. Yet why has such a crucial activity received so little attention? Inadequacies in recording and documenting are often to blame in high profile child protection cases and have been identified in successive inquiries into tragic deaths. This highly topical book explores the often conflicting demands on social workers as they record information on case files, and it will stimulate a long overdue debate as to how to achieve more effective recording in social work. Evidence based, it covers both child and adult social work and includes the voices of social workers, discussing both good and bad practices and the dilemmas of recording. Author Liz O”Rourke is a freelance researcher and trainer, who heads Continuing Professional Development courses on recording for social work departments.

The influence of sex work venues on condom uses among female sex workers in Senggigi, Indonesia.

Indonesia is facing a sharp increase in its HIV epidemic among female sex workers (FSWs). A better understanding of the HIV risk behaviors among this group is needed to prevent further spread of this epidemic. A growing literature documents a synergistic relationship between the individual and the environment in conditioning sexual behavior. However, little attention, until now, has been given to understanding the influence FSWs' venue/environment where they solicit customers have on FSWs' risk and protective behaviors. This study examines the influence of sex work venues on condom use among FSWs recruited from four sex work venues located in the Senggigi beach area of Lombok, Indonesia. A cross-sectional venue-based sampling design was used. Three categories of FSWs were sampled: those who solicit clients at (1) discotheques/bars (freelance), (2) brothels, and (3) entertainment places (e.g. karaoke bars and massage parlors). A structured questionnaire administered to 115 women solicited information about the women, the characteristics of their sex work venue and last three clients, client-specific sexual behaviors, condom use, and sex-related alcohol consumption. A three-level Hierarchical Generalized Linear Model (HGLM) using HLM 6 was used to examine the influence of sex work venue on condom use. Overall, the sample represented 326 clients (level-1) "nested" in 115 women (level-2) and "nested" in 16 sex work venues (level-3). Multilevel analysis revealed that condom use varied across sex work venues and by individual FSWs (p <0.05) and condom use among this group is predicted not only by individual factors but also by the venue where these women seek and meet their clients and by client factors. Specifically, HIV/AIDS policies and services offered at sex work venues (p < 0.10), ever worrying about contracting HIV (p < 0.05) and ever being married (p < 0.10) were associated with higher condom use and having

Theorizing freelance writing in technical communication: Examining the presence or absence of contextualization and ”the social perspective” for writers external to organizations.

$49.99

Faigley’s social perspective theory (1985) explains the critical relationship between writing and the social environment in which that writing takes place—the influence of corporate culture and interactions with supervisors and co-workers. Yet, despite the applicability of this theory to in-house technical writing, it does not explain the success of freelance technical writers who largely work removed from their clients’ corporate cultures. To examine this relationship, this study seeks to identify adaptive techniques used by 21 respondents to successfully perform their work removed from their clients’ organizations. The study also explores the concepts of professionalism and ethics as they relate to freelance technical writers. Data tools include email surveys, email interviews, and phone interviews. Respondents were categorized into two groups, according to their access to their clients’ corporate culture information: the High Corporate Culture group and the Low Corporate Culture group. Although both groups are successful and do not believe they work from a disadvantage as they freelance, they work very differently. High Corporate Culture group members largely have previous in-house experience as full-time writers for at least one of their clients, and perhaps as a result, structure their freelance work very similarly to how they worked when employed as full-time permanent employees. Few Low Corporate Culture group members have worked in-house for their clients and prefer to do most, if not all, of their work via remote. Low Corporate Culture respondents rely on patterns to acquire information regarding new clients. They seek patterns based on clients they have already worked with. There were few differences discovered between the two groups in regard to their professionalism and ethics. Both believe they face greater or different demands on their professionalism as freelance technical writers as compared to their in-house counterparts. Both groups have also
