Three Pillars on Which Freelance Projects Can Rest

A green yet smart SaaS-tool
Teamlab
gracefully mixes project management features with the ability to collect knowledge and data specific for various freelance groups. The free webbased TeamLab application can be a real help for those who have to manage their internal and external projects worldwide.

Think Strategically

The first compound part of this mix is common for most of the project management software – time tracking, milestones, reports generating, contact lists, documents processing and sharing, etc. – the list is long.

All the time and efforts that Freelancers spend on projects coordination can be reduced as TeamLab automates the processes. Less time on routine, more attention to work.

Think Universally

The second part of the
Teamlab
mix (and for some teams, the most vital one) is a kind of a control center to collect files, media and notes, comment on them, discuss project issues, share references and useful resources relating to freelancers’ projects.

Teamlab
involves several modes to make the data available to all teammates. The integrated Wiki makes it possible to draw a do-it-yourself article. Blogs and forums are an intelligent way to discuss the topic without overwhelming the inboxes. All the links to useful resources or interesting posts on the Internet are stored in a special section.

As a result, freelancers get a powerful tool to manage the information flaws within their
Teamlab
portal and it is some kind of a copyright as all the information stays inside the project.

Think Pragmatically

One more pro to decide for TeamLab is that the application is free which means all teammates can afford it.
Teamlab
is an open source solution which implies software customization specific for the needs of the team. This is a webbased application and that ensures a round-the-clock access from various parts of the world.

What’s in the End?

The Internet statistics shows that most of Freelance Workers need some kind of a combination of a project management tool and a knowledge center gathered in one place.

For the most part, TeamLab conforms with requirements of a freelance team that can be very diverse – both teams and requirements.

Excerpt: Robert Capa (October 22, 1913 May 25, 1954), born Endre Ern Friedmann, was a Hungarian combat photographer and photojournalist who covered five different wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He documented the course of World War II in London, North Africa, Italy, the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris. His action photographs, such as those taken during the 1944 Normandy invasion, portray the violence of war with unique impact. In 1947, Capa co-founded Magnum Photos with, among others, the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The organization was the first cooperative agency for worldwide freelance photographers. Born Endre Friedmann to Dezs and Júlia Friedmann on October 22, 1913 in Budapest, Hungary. Deciding that there was little future under the regime in Hungary, he left home at 18. Capa originally wanted to be a writer; however, he found work in photography in Berlin and grew to love the art. In 1933, he moved from Germany to France because of the rise of Nazism, but found it difficult to find work there as a freelance journalist. He adopted the name “Robert Capa” around this time because he felt that it would be recognizable and American-sounding since it was similar to that of film director Frank Capra. (In fact, “cápa” is a Hungarian word meaning ‘shark’.) Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano, September 5, 1936From 1936 to 1939, he was in Spain, photographing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, along with Gerda Taro, his companion and professional photography partner, and David Seymour. Excerpt: Sir Lionel Arthur Lindsay (17 October 1874 22 May 1961) was an Australian artist. Lindsay was born in the Victorian town of Creswick, the brother of artist Norman Lindsay and artist and critic Daryl Lindsay and of the relatively unknown artists Ruby Lindsay and Percy Lindsay. Lionel Lindsay became a pupil-assistant at the Melbourne Observatory (1889-1892) and later studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne and in George Coates’ rooms. Lindsay taught himself etching and engraving in the 1890s while a student, immediately prior to his first trip to Spain and England. On his return to Australia he settled in Sydney as a freelance artist and journalist, contributing to the Bulletin and other magazines and newspapers. In 1907 he held an extremely successful exhibition of etchings in Sydney with the Society of Artists. The two decades after 1907 saw him active with the Society of Artists and in 1921, when the Australian Painter-Etchers’ Society was formed, Lindsay was its first president. He began to exhibit in London in 1923 and had his most successful exhibition of that period at Colnaghi, a London art dealer, in 1927. Colnaghi’s Galleries and the critic Harold Wright led British interest in Lindsay’s work and guaranteed his reputation as a major British printmaker and watercolourist. Key themes in his oeuvre include the swagman in the outback, old Sydney, portraits of prominent Australians, romantic views of Spain and Arab culture, a series of classically inspired works and birds and animals. Lindsay became a Trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and was knighted for his services to Australian art in 1941. In 1942 Lindsay published Addled Art, a vituperative and anti-semitic attack on modernism in art. Lindsay’s… More:

Established on July 1, 1906, the Balboa Pavilion played a prominent role in the development of Newport Beach by attracting real estate buyers to an area formerly designated as swamp and overflow land. The Balboa Pavilion is one of California’s last surviving waterfront recreational pavilions from the turn of the century. The Pavilion continues to serve the public today as a marine recreational facility and is Newport Beachs most famous landmark, as well as its oldest standing building. On September 20, 1905, the War Department in Washington D.C. granted a group of promoters, called the Newport Bay Investment Company, permission to construct the Pavilion as a boat-house, bath-house, and pavilion. The promoters built the pavilion on the Newport Harbor side of the sand spit and its sister project, the Balboa Pier, on the adjacent ocean side of the sand spit, which is today called the Balboa Peninsula. These two structures were built to attract lot purchasers to this area of Newport Beach called Balboa. The pavilion was designed by Los Angeles freelance architect Fred R. Dorn, who would later go on to work as an associate of Morgan, Walls

Freelancing Expertise: Contract Professionals in the New Economy

Freelancing Expertise: Contract Professionals in the New Economy

$24.95

Contract work is more important than ever-for better or for worse, depending on one’s perspective. The security once implied by a full-time job with a stable employer is becoming rarer, thereby erasing one of the major distinctions between “freelance work” and a “steady gig.” Why hang on to a regular job for the sake of security if security can no longer be assumed? Instead, contractors, hired temporarily for specific knowledge and skills, market their expertise as they move from project to project. Even though their employment is precarious, a great many consider freelancing preferable to holding a “regular” job: the control they feel over their time and careers is well worth the risks that come with relatively uncertain cash flow. Freelancing Expertise is a qualitative study of decision making, work practices, and occupational processes among writers and editors who work in print and Web communications and programmers and engineers who work in software and systems development. Debra Osnowitz conducted sixty-eight extended interviews with representatives of both groups and twelve interviews with managers and recruiters, observed four different work settings in which contractors work alongside employees, and monitored blogs and online discussions among contractors. As a result, she provides a unique and sensitive assessment of a cultural shift in occupations and organizations. Osnowitz calls for a reconfiguration of the employer/employee relationship that accepts more variation and flexibility: just as “freelancing” has, over time, taken on many traits considered characteristic of traditional career paths, so might regular jobs make themselves more appealing to today’s workforce by mimicking some of the positive aspects of transactions between clients and contract workers.

An independent contractor is a natural person, business, or corporation that provides goods or services to another entity under terms specified in a contract or within a verbal agreement. Unlike an employee, an independent contractor does not work regularly for an employer but works as and when required, during which time she or he may be subject to the Law of Agency. Independent contractors are usually paid on a freelance basis. Contractors often work through a limited company, which they themselves own, or may work through an umbrella company. This race, which became a reality in 1974, was later replicated in other countries, and by the 1980s attracted widespread interest. In 1980, Hall moved to work for James Goldsmith ‘s magazine NOW! , during which time he hosted a lunch at which fine wines were served. For this one meal he claimed, and was paid, expenses of more than £11,000. The magazine closed the following year, after which Hall retired to Suffolk , selling wine and offering tasting sessions. He continued writing about wine on a freelance basis, and organised wine tours of France. References (URLs online) Media offices A hyperlinked version of this

He attended Southeast University in Nanjing, and graduated with a degree in electric power. After working as an engineer in a state-owned thermal power plant for five years, he quit his job in 1994 to become a freelance writer. His first published short story, I Love Dollars, was denounced by some critics as the “shameless and indecent novel of a hooligan.” In 1998, he instigated and became identified with the Rupture movement(duanlie) to voice dissatisfaction with the literary establishment. He sent questionnaires to about 70 writers, about 55 of which responded. The responses were sarcastic and mostly expressed discontent, and later spawned publications that nurtured more independence among writers. In an introduction to Zhu Wen’s short stories, translator Julia Lovell characterized his ‘trademark narrative style’ as “a loosely punctuated, first-person voice in which speech, both direct and indirect, run on within sentences of descriptive prose, designed to capture the unceremonious, free-flowing rhythms of action and dialogue in contemporary China.” The cover of What is Garbage, What is LoveAs a writer, he was labeled as part of a ‘newly-born generation’ (xinshengdai) movement. He began writing short stories and novellas in 1991. He has written the following novellas: His only novel-length work is What is Garbage, What is Love. (). Each year writers and editors submit over three thousand grammar and style questions to the Q&A page at The Chicago Manual of Style Online. Some are arcane, some simply hilarious—and one editor, Carol Fisher Saller, reads every single one of them. All too often she notes a classic author-editor standoff, wherein both parties refuse to compromise on the “rights” and “wrongs” of prose styling: “This author is giving me a fit.” “I wish that I could just DEMAND the use of the serial comma at all times.” “My author wants his preface to come at the end of the book. This just seems ridiculous to me. I mean, it’s not a post-face.”In The Subversive Copy Editor, Saller casts aside this adversarial view and suggests new strategies for keeping the peace. Emphasizing habits of carefulness, transparency, and flexibility, she shows copy editors how to build an environment of trust and cooperation. One chapter takes on the difficult author; another speaks to writers themselves. Throughout, the focus is on serving the reader, even if it means breaking “rules” along the way. Saller’s own foibles and misadventures provide ample material: “I mess up all the time,” she confesses. “It’s how I know things.”Writers, Saller acknowledges, are only half the challenge, as copy editors can also make trouble for themselves. (Does any other book have an index entry that says “terrorists. See copy editors”?) The book includes helpful sections on e-mail etiquette, work-flow management, prioritizing, and organizing computer files. One chapter even addresses the special concerns of freelance editors.Saller’s emphasis on negotiation and flexibility will surprise many copy editors who have absorbed, along with the dos and don’ts of their stylebooks, an attitude that their way is the right way. He was often an appreciated and honored guest and speaker, though usually met with tongue-in-cheek praise. At times, though, his welcome came pre-worn-out, as when he rushed in on Leonard Bacon as he was entertaining guests at home, shook his hand and announced expectantly, “I, Sir, am no less a man than Daniel Pratt Daniel Pratt, Sir, the great American traveler!” Dr. Bacon, unimpressed, replied, “All right Travel!” Pratt was a prolific and generous generator of ideas, but in spite of this was heard to complain that “it was utterly impossible for him to talk fast enough to get out his ideas, so rapidly did they grow in his fertile brain.” Lectures Pratt lectured widely, not only on university campuses, but in town halls, churches, and wherever he could find an audience. He would attend meetings of many varieties, from religious ceremonies to city government meetings to women’s suffrage conventions, with the hopes of being able to
